Relief in marble

The motif

A child is accompanied by a large angel. Inscription: “Do not forget to do good”.

The story

It was possible to place donations in the brass mountings below the relief for the benefit of the poor children of the parish. It is called the school collection box. Perhaps Thorvaldsen has made a self-portrait depicted in the child.

The facts

Thorvaldsen sculpted it in Copenhagen in 1838 as a counterpart for ’Caritas’ on the opposite wall in the church. Both were put on display in 1840.
