Philip the Apostle
The statue
Philip is holding a small cross.
The story
The legends say that Philip came to Skytia, meaning north of the Black Sea, and here he baptised everyone, ordained preachers and extinguished heresy. Apparently, he died peacefully at the age of 87. However, a later legend claims that he was crucified in Hierapolis.
The facts
Completed in 1823 by Ferdinand Pettrich from Thorvaldsen’s sketch.
The statue was displayed in marble in 1838.
